چکیده
An electrooptic effect in the blue phase of the cholesteric mixture S811- and the nematic mixture N5 is reported. To demonstrate this effect ac voltages (f = 1000 Hz) between 0 and 150 V were applied. Wavelength shifts of 70 nm were obtained.

Electrostriction of the cholesteric blue phases BPI and BPII in mixtures with positive dielectric anisotropy
The electrostriction of the cubic blue phases was investigated in the well known mixture CB15/E9. The results for BPI prove that a decrease of the lattice constant in the field direction with increasing field strength can occur in a system with positive dielectric anisotropy. In agreement with recent theoretical considerations, all components of the electrostriction tensor for this mixture exhi...
متن کاملGeometrical Model of the Tetragonal BPX Blue Phase
Crystals of BPI and BP2 blue phases exhibit different crystalline structures un~ der sufficiently high electric field. When the dielectric anisotropy is positive, the same tetragonal phase, called BPX, has been observed when the field is applied, either along a two-fold axis of the BP1 phase, or along a four~fold axis of the BP2 phase. With the help of the geometrical models of cubic blue phase...
متن کاملLower operation voltage in dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystals based on the thermodielectric effect.
Dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystal (DFCLC) devices characteristically require high operation voltage, which hinders their further development in thin-film-transistor driving. Here we report on a lower-voltage switching method based on the thermodielectric effect. This technique entails applying a high-frequency voltage to occasion dielectric oscillation heating so to induce the increase ...
متن کاملFlexible area-color reflective displays based on electric-field-induced blueshift in a cholesteric liquid-crystal film
Haiqing Xianyu Kuan-Ming Chen Shin-Tson Wu Abstract — An electrically controllable blueshift of the reflection band is observed in a cholesteric liquid crystal with either positive or negative dielectric anisotropy. The change in optical properties is a result of a two-dimensional periodic undulation of the cholesteric texture, known as Helfrich deformation. This blueshift mechanism was used to...
متن کاملOptical imaging of the effect of in-plane fields on cholesteric liquid crystals.
The effects of in-plane electric fields on the director structure of cholesteric liquid crystals has been imaged in three dimensions using fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. The results show that a liquid crystal lying outside the electrode gap can be significantly affected by stray fields occurring above the electrode surface, resulting in a 90 degrees rotation of the cholesteric hel...
